I met Tony once and he's such a nice guy as well as an amazing talent.

The Gene Deitch interview is wonderful! I'm so happy someone is doing something to showcase these wonderful artists and creators who deserve credit for their work.

These interviews are amazing! Is there a link so I can follow these as new interviews? I hope you can do more. I'm going to go listen some more.

Many thanks,
Jeff Willis
http://jeffwillisartist.blogspot.com/

JWhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00615359351974038821noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2335713303549784604.post-17233630033141666832011-03-30T13:43:13.707-07:002011-03-30T13:43:13.707-07:00these are great. keep going.

SO in the nutshell....
"The art GETS you there...but the writing KEEPS you there!"

Just my opinion.....(LOL!)

As for the Born Loser,...I'm regretting that harsh critique a bit more now. Thanks!!

I just don't like it and should have left it at that,...but does it deserve to be in the papers today? Still? I have to say NO WAY!

Perhaps I will delete that portion of the show and re-do it. Not sure yet. Sometimes I'm not sure that I want to classify some folks that way though! Do they purposely draw that bad?

If I dig deep enough, I think I can find some examples of Art Sansom's Born Loser before his son took over art (and probably the strip). I think you would like it. The son is obviously not much of an artist.

When Walt Kelly died, his widow took Pogo over, and there was a point when the art was just atrocious, but when the assistant was doing it, it was fine. I think that Selby Kelly did the same thing that Chip Sansom is doing, tracing older drawings. At least that's what it looks like!

Thanks for the Hal Peary video, I'm a big fan of OTR and seeing this made me smile!Bruce Rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16856039154299398759noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2335713303549784604.post-18657191336366655102008-12-05T09:13:00.000-08:002008-12-05T09:13:00.000-08:00Hey Bruce!!! Always happy to know that somebody listens to my podcast besides my mother!!
hey,..I can remember back in the 70's as a kid in Upstate NY laying on the family room carpet (shag) and opening the Sunday Comics Section to see Prince Valiant in all of it's glory complete with AMAZING artwork and the graceful penmanship!!! I didn't understand any of it, but I sure enjoyed looking at the art!
Recently I glanced at a current PV strip to check it out and again I was simply in awe of the beautiful art.

Still,...I'm scratching my head as to "why?". I'd rather see Gianni do something in the same style perhaps but call it something different. At the very least, evolve it into something new and call it something else.

I hear what your saying about the old "stand byes", but I do have to question the "polls" that were conducted by that syndicate and just how thorough they were in reality. Regardless,..I HONESTLY feel with all of my heart, there is a simple solution and it lies with technology. The digital newspaper wirelessly subscribed and transmitted to OLED sheets where people can then order the comics they want to read ala cart.
It seems like the only way newspapers can not only survive,...but flourish once again.

As much as I like the internet, I will never like it as much as "holding a page" in my hand WHEREVER and WHENEVER I want. The OLED can be rolled up like a comic book and shoved in a bag or read while you sit at your favorite local household bathroom.

If you free up the limitations of the printed page with a digital page....you also free up the limitations of available comics and articles too.

Will this ever happen? Will the technology speed up and allow for an affordable mass production and distribution of the OLED material in time to save the newspaper? Will the newspapers be too narrow minded and slow and miss the opportunity should it present itself? Who knows!!!

Stay "tooned" to find out.Togotoonerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16531821776682850136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2335713303549784604.post-27388508615690884162008-12-02T04:28:00.000-08:002008-12-02T04:28:00.000-08:00Not sure that I fully agree with your thoughts on ...Not sure that I fully agree with your thoughts on comic strips. There are certainly some strips that were carried on by others and have retained quality. Right now I can think of Prince Valiant which I'm reading in collected form. Almost as fun as the old Hal Foster strip, and Gary Gianni is a good artist. But in general? I'd agree, let them die!

For a while one of the syndicates was trying out new strips on their website and I thought several had promise, but in the end, most comic readers want to see old favorites like Nancy and reruns of Peanuts rather than experience something new. Those were always my favorite segments of the older Pink Panther (more so than the Pink Panther himself).

And Vector Magic sounds awesome! I've actually switched back to using 100% Photoshop for my comics (for quicker workflow reasons). But it's nice to know there's a viable, albeit expensive, option out there to "save" my raster work into the vector world in case I ever need to.

Great show, Todd!oyComicshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16375576519548059056noreply@blogger.com
